Battery Maintenance Guide: Keep Your Battery Healthy for Years
From terminal cleaning to charge checks, idle vehicles to electrolyte monitoring — the maintenance habits that extend battery life.
Most batteries die early not from manufacturing defects but from neglect and poor usage habits. A simple maintenance routine can add 1–2 years to your battery's life.
Monthly Visual Check
Once a month, spend 30 seconds under the bonnet: any swelling or cracks in the case? White-green oxidation on the terminals? Is the battery firmly clamped? Vibration is the plates' sneakiest enemy — a loose battery suffers internal damage with every bump.
Terminal Cleaning
Oxidation weakens cranking current and blocks charging. To clean: engine off, disconnect negative (-) first, then positive (+). Scrub with a brush dipped in baking soda solution, dry, reconnect in reverse order and apply terminal protection spray.
Monitoring State of Charge
A healthy battery reads above 12.6V with the engine off. Below 12.4V means undercharged; below 12.0V is critical. If you mostly drive short trips, the alternator never fully recharges the battery — take a 30–40 minute uninterrupted drive monthly or use a smart charger.
Temperature Management
Extreme heat evaporates electrolyte; extreme cold cuts capacity. Park in shade in summer, in a garage in winter. Before winter, always get a free battery test.
Electrical Discipline
Never leave lights, audio or fans running with the engine off. Thirty minutes of music with the ignition off can drain a serious share of your battery. Double-check interior lights and headlamps when leaving the car.
Professional Testing
Have CCA and internal resistance tested at least once a year. Testing reveals a fading battery months before it strands you. At Çetin Akü stores this test is free — with a written report.

Frequently Asked Questions
No water top-up is needed, but terminal cleaning, case inspection, secure mounting and periodic charge testing apply to every battery. 'Maintenance-free' only refers to electrolyte top-up.
For stops longer than 2 weeks: fully charge the battery, disconnect the negative terminal if possible, or connect a smart maintainer. Beyond a month, check charge monthly.
