The 150-year-old lead-acid chemistry is still the backbone of the world battery market — but it hides dozens of variations, and lithium is rapidly adding new layers. This guide offers a map simple enough to decide by.
Flooded (Serviceable) Batteries
The classic: free liquid electrolyte requiring periodic distilled water top-ups. Today it lives mainly in tractors and older heavy vehicles. Cheap and repairable — but it never forgives neglected maintenance.
SMF: The Modern Standard
Sealed Maintenance Free. Hybrid calcium plate alloys minimise water loss; a gas recombination system preserves the electrolyte. It's the standard solution for today's cars and light commercials. Our SMF series spans 35–100Ah in European and JIS cases.
EFB: Start-Stop's Economical Answer
The Enhanced Flooded Battery delivers twice the cycle endurance of standard SMF through reinforced plates and polyester scrim. It's the factory solution for start-stop vehicles — more economical than AGM.
AGM: Premium Performance
Electrolyte absorbed in glass mat: sealed, extremely vibration-resistant, high-current capable. First choice for electronics-heavy premium cars, regenerative braking systems and motorcycles.
Gel: Master of the Deep Cycle
Silica-gelled electrolyte brings full recovery from deep discharge and hot-environment tolerance. Indispensable for marine, caravan, solar and golf carts. Details in our AGM vs Gel article.
LiFePO4: The Crown Contender
A third of lead-acid's weight, 3–5× the cycle life, fast charging and smart management via integrated BMS. The upfront cost is higher, but in cycle-intensive duty (forklifts, caravans, energy storage) it wins on total cost. Explore our TAB lithium series.
