Forklift Battery Guide: Selection, Maintenance and Cost Control

24V or 48V? What is a PzS cell? How to cut total cost of ownership and match battery choice to your shift pattern.

The battery accounts for 30–40% of an electric forklift's purchase price, and it will be renewed at least once in the truck's working life. The right choice and care bring your warehouse's biggest hidden cost under control.

What Is a Traction Battery?

Forklift batteries are built from 2V PzS (armoured tubular plate) cells connected in series inside a steel tray: 12 cells make 24V, 24 cells 48V, 40 cells 80V. Unlike a starter battery, they're designed for all-day deep discharge. Çetin Akü supplies all PzS/PzB configurations from 120 Ah to 1000 Ah.

Choosing the Right Capacity

Capacity follows shift length and consumption. Rule of thumb: the battery should end the shift at 20–30% charge remaining. Daily discharge beyond 80% burns through cycle life fast. Intense two-shift operations need a spare battery with a change station — or lithium.

5 Maintenance Rules That Extend Life

  • Distilled water top-up: Check levels weekly, AFTER charging. Never add acid.
  • Full-charge discipline: Don't interrupt charges; every cut-short charge accelerates sulphation.
  • Avoid opportunity charging: Every top-up counts as a cycle.
  • Watch temperature: Charging above 45°C permanently wears plates; ventilate the charging room.
  • Monthly equalisation charge: Balances voltage differences between cells.

Cost Control: Replace or Restore?

A battery down to 60–70% capacity is not always scrap. Where the loss is sulphation-driven, our regeneration service recovers most of the capacity and can defer new investment for years — at up to 70% lower cost.

When Does Lithium Make Sense?

For multi-shift operations, unavoidable opportunity charging or cold storage, LiFePO4 wins on total cost: zero maintenance, fast charging and up to 3× the cycle life. Let's analyse your operating profile together — request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

A quality PzS battery achieves 1500+ cycles (5–6 years on single shift) with proper care. Electrolyte neglect and habitual opportunity charging can halve this.

For classic lead-acid PzS batteries, yes: every opportunity charge counts as a cycle and reduces total life. If between-shift charging is a must, consider switching to lithium (LiFePO4).
